Words from the wild

Every journey we craft becomes a story. These are just a few of theirs.

Calvin didn't just show us Tanzania — he invited us into it. Our guide knew every bird call, every track in the dust. On day three we watched a cheetah hunt from twenty metres. I haven't breathed the same since.

We brought three children, ages 8, 11 and 14. By day two our youngest was identifying animals by their footprints. CalvinSafari made Tanzania belong to them. We are already planning our return.

For our honeymoon we wanted extraordinary. A private camp in the Serengeti, dinner under the Milky Way — CalvinSafari created magic that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know before you go

Can't find your answer? Ask Simba below or send us a message — we reply within 24 hours.

Tanzania is a year-round destination. June–October is the dry season — the best for game viewing as wildlife gathers at waterholes and the famous Mara River crossings happen July–September. January–March is wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti — spectacular and far less crowded. November–December (short rains) brings green landscapes and excellent bird watching at lower prices.

All our packages include: private 4×4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof, experienced professional guide, all national park and conservation area fees, accommodation (camp or lodge as per your itinerary), all meals while on safari, airport transfers, and a pre-departure briefing pack. International flights are not included but we can recommend preferred airlines and routes.

Our journeys start from $3,800/person for a Kilimanjaro trek, $6,200/person for a 7-day northern circuit luxury safari, and $8,900/couple for a honeymoon safari + Zanzibar. Every itinerary is fully bespoke — the final price depends on duration, lodge selection, and the number of parks visited. Send us your dates for a personalised quote.

Tanzania is one of Africa's most stable, peaceful, and tourist-friendly countries — welcoming visitors since the 1970s. The national parks are extremely safe; you are always accompanied by experienced guides trained in wilderness first aid. As with any international travel, standard precautions apply in cities. We provide a full safety briefing for every guest before departure.

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Tanzania. We strongly recommend malaria prophylaxis (consult your doctor 6–8 weeks before travel), Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and ensuring your routine vaccinations are up to date. We include a detailed health and vaccination guide in every pre-departure pack.

Pack light, neutral clothing — khaki, olive, beige, and tan. Avoid bright colours and white (dust shows easily). You'll need a warm fleece or jacket for early morning game drives, long sleeves and trousers for evenings, a wide-brim sun hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, and quality binoculars. For bush flights, use soft-sided bags only (max 15kg). We send every confirmed guest a full personalised packing list.

Absolutely — and we highly recommend it. The contrast of wild bush and barefoot beach luxury is what makes a Tanzania holiday truly unforgettable. Zanzibar is just a 20-minute flight from the mainland. We typically recommend 3–5 nights in Zanzibar after your safari. Our most popular combination is 6 nights safari + 4 nights Zanzibar — the perfect 10-day journey.

The Great Migration is the largest movement of land mammals on Earth — 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and thousands of gazelle moving in a continuous annual loop between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. The most dramatic moments are the Mara River crossings (July–September), where herds plunge into crocodile-filled waters. The calving season (January–March) in the southern Serengeti is equally extraordinary, with thousands of calves born daily.

All CalvinSafari journeys are 100% private. You will never share your vehicle, your guide, or your game drives with other travellers. Your vehicle, your schedule, your pace — completely. This means you can stop whenever you want, stay as long as you like at a sighting, and have your guide's full attention at all times. It also means completely flexible timing and the freedom to change plans on the day.

Most nationalities (USA, UK, EU, Australia, Canada and many others) can obtain a Tourist Visa on Arrival at major airports for $50 USD. You can also apply in advance via the Tanzania e-Visa portal (evisa.go.tz) — recommended to save time on arrival. You'll need a valid passport with at least 6 months' validity beyond your travel dates, a Yellow Fever certificate, and proof of onward travel. We include full visa guidance in every pre-departure pack.

Tanzania is a wonderful destination for families. We recommend a minimum age of 5 years for game drives. Our guides are experienced at engaging younger travellers — explaining animal behaviour, teaching tracking skills, and bringing the bush to life. We select family-friendly lodges with connecting rooms, kids' menus, and child-appropriate activities. Many families tell us the safari is the most impactful experience their children have ever had.

You don't need prior mountaineering experience — but you do need a good base of fitness. Most people who summit Kilimanjaro are regular walkers or hikers, not elite athletes. The key factors are acclimatisation (why we recommend the 8-day Lemosho Route), a positive mindset, and listening to your guide's pace. We recommend 3–4 months of preparation: regular hiking, building up elevation where possible, and some cardiovascular training.

Booking is simple. Start by filling in our enquiry form or messaging Calvin on WhatsApp. We respond within 24 hours with a personalised itinerary and quote. Once you're happy, a 30% deposit secures your dates and begins the detailed planning. The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure. We accept bank transfer, credit/debit card, and PayPal.

We strongly require all guests to have comprehensive travel insurance before departure. Your policy must include medical evacuation cover — a bush evacuation can cost over $15,000 without it. We recommend providers such as World Nomads, Battleface, or Allianz, and we'll include insurance guidance in your pre-departure pack. We don't sell insurance directly but we're happy to point you in the right direction.
